Parade and Pie Fight

That's what's happening right now-- I was going to attend, but got stuck in Yonkers doing simple household things (like getting the car fixed-- stupid flat tire!)

I hope it went well!

I had a small querelous feeling about these two particular events-- I'm sure that from a "civilian" perspective they are going to be fun to attend-- but as a guy who likes to get paid to perform at festivals, parades, and yes, occasionally, pie fights, I wasn't sure how I was going to attend this. Clown, or blogger? Spectator? I wasn't specifically asked to be at the pie fight or at the parade, so I was basically planning to go as a spectator. But that got me wondering about the clowns w

As a clown, I am often asked to do free events, and I really only ever do the ones that I am intimately involved with. Ie, for an organization that I am already a member of, or that I am a donor to. I often get told "Hey it will be good exposure for you." My general line is "Hey, people die of exposure." I am often willing to work with the clients, or make something work out, (I've bartered shows for gym memberships and other kinds of intangible benefits) In general I try not to do free events if I can help it.

Everybody has a different reason for doing their work-- I love being a clown, and I love entertaining people and creating interesting shows, but I also very much like that I get paid for it-- that my work has value for people and that they are willing to pay for it. That jazzes me a little.

If you participated in the Pie Fight and/or Parade (either as a paid or free clown, or even as a spectator) I'd love to get your perspective on the event. Feel free to leave a message/comment below.

That's actually true for any of the posts-- I welcome your comments!
